For many, this will come as hard news. And it is truly a sad day for GLB. Bitterwhiteguy and I received news this morning from Satchmo’s family that Satch will no longer be able to play this game. He had something like a stroke and is conscience but not responsive to any stimuli.

Satch has been diagnosed as terminally ill some time ago, and has since lived longer than the diagnoses given him. While playing the game, he has been in the hospital on some occasions and has had various problems, including with his sight. He was so determined to be a part of GLB that he had his nephew read and type for him through some of the worst stages.

There are people in life that transcend their jobs and hobbies and the things they do. If you know Satch in the least, you know he is one of these people. To many here, Satch is bigger than GLB or sims or bugs or strategy.

If you are like me, you noticed Satch as early as season 1 for some of his work in the game. He wowed you with a report or an insight to the game you hadn’t even thought of, much less planned out in detail. You noticed his player spreadsheet, or in-depth scouting report, his rankings report or league predictor, his football explanations that were formulated with D1 coaches or his team analysis charts. Maybe you found his explanation of equipment benefits and strategy, his take on the AI under\over use, his league tracker, or his report on the longest undefeated teams. Whether you noticed him through South America, the Orange Blood network, his contribution to the main forum, or if you were lucky enough to be on his team or one of the 25+ teams he GMed, you thought, “this guy knows football and this game”, and you knew it would be wise to get acquainted with him.

But after you interacted with Satch, you knew he was more than just the devotion he had for this game. Satch was always willing to help you understand things. He did reports for your team even though you knew he couldn’t possible have time to do as much as he did. He would give you whatever he could to make the game better for you. Satch is the kind of guy that can depend on and feel connected to right away even though you are separated by the internet. Many people asked Satch for favors, and he did it because he likes to help, to serve, to make those around him better. I have to admit that I have said I would help many people, but ran out of time and let things slip that I promised, but I tell you this, if Satch ever asked for anything, I did it without hesitation, and still would.

And all the while, the boys in Santa Cruz kept on rolling to W’s and playoff victories. And those that were lucky enough to get to know Satch, respected him immensely for who he is and what he did. He kept his condition as private as possible so as not to be treated with kid gloves. But if you learned what he was dealing with, you learned that Satch was more than you even thought or could imagine.

His character and person where always unmistakable, but his impact on the game really stood out in the SA riots. When ever patient Satch finally got so frustrated with the situation at hand, a huge chunk of SA, the Orange Bloods and the community in General came to his defense. And many were of the same conviction as I… if that junk caused Satch to leave GLB, we were going too. Bort immediately recognized these qualities of Satch, and Satch came out a Mod. Those who have seen him work since, know that he wore the badge with class and honor and was a credit to the game and to Bort.

To his family:
We are thinking of Satchmo-n-Dizzy and you, and many are praying for you all. I for one wanted to let you know what he means to me and this community. There is no one on this game I respect more and no one I will miss more. If there were anything I could do for Satch, I would do it in a heartbeat. Thanks for sharing him with us in this online community, and may God bless you in this difficult time.

Satch has prepared a statement to release in the event of his passing. In it, he requested that memorials be made to a MS society or MS walk of one's choosing instead of flowers or cards.

Since many have asked for a way to help at this time, a fund has been set up at the National MS Society as a means to honor him, while he is still living, for his character, class, and servant attitude he displayed on these forums and in this game.

Satch is a ardent supporter of the MS societies as his Mother is also affected by MS. It would truly honor him if you made a donation of any amount as a show of support either to this fund or in other support of MS prevention and cure.

I am sad to see Satch go. I didn't know him as well as many others here but from what I did know he was a great guy and a huge help to everyone on GLB. I wish Satch and his family all the best in whatever happens in their struggle.

That's really sad to hear. He was a respected member of our community and a great guy when I talked to him.

This serves as a reminder that life is much bigger than our little game here, and everyone should make the best out of every day, no matter what.

Please post with respect. Limit your posting to wishing Satch and his family well, and remembering him for who he was while he played this game. Spam and general idiotic behavior will not be tolerated to any degree and will result in a suspension without further warning.

I may not have known Satch as much as a lot of the heavy hitters in GLB, but this news pains me.

He provided me with several programs to use, some of which I use in EEA5 for predictions, etc.

He gave me advice on many things from player builds to financing a team to recruiting and so much more.

I chatted with him a few times back and forth in forums and via email.

He truly was one of the greatest people I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. Whether it was random football talk or GLB advice he always treated you as an equal and never spoke down to you.

With Satch leaving GLB, after all he has done for the game, it is truly disheartening that he will not be able to see the game go 'live' and exit the 'beta' phase.

I wish nothing but the best for him and his family.

only spoke to him a few times but he helped me greatly, was one of the true greats of the game, saw some of his posts in certain forums etc and he was helpful to everyone and probably the nicest guy on here.

wish him and his family the best.

Rob, you are in our prayers. We really hope that experimental treatment will work... Throughout the 4 seasons of GLB you have made a lot of friends by being yourself. Chicago Rocks and myself would like to thank you for the wonderful time spent together, and wish you but the best.

God Bless You and Your Family! Know that we are next to you all the way. If there's anything we can do, please tell us...

Your dear friend, Chris Sutton
