As for general questions posed:

Yes, a high salary can get you some fame. Not a high bonus, but a good salary. Only applies once a season. Applies to renegotiations with your current team.

Signing as a FA in a league that's way below your level can actually hurt your fame rating, since people don't want to watch you play scrubs all year.

Reaching certain stats milestones, winning trophies, etc. helps fame.

A high fame rating raises your minimum salary requirement. High fame also gives you access to endorsements to make cash and access to some of the best stuff for improving your player's performance.

Training will most likely end up costing people a little more on average, but not because the price is going up. Intense will actually cost less, but you will want to do it more often if you can.

Playing loose doesn't mean you'll always go for the bat down. Playing loose means you're just trying to keep the guy in front of you and are not going to try and go straight for the ball when it's thrown. Medium is more of the "bat down" setting, while aggressive is the "try to get the INT every time" setting.

Yeah, I'm talking about matchups that the team owner enters.

Like he can edit his list of CB's and use some pulldowns to select the name of the WR he wants to to be the #1 priority for each CB. If that WR's in the game, the CB covers him. If not it just falls back to the same logic as now.

There's probably some conflict stuff that might get hairy, like if you choose the same matchup on more than one player, but you get the idea.

Glad to hear you like where it's headed!

I have to say I'm pretty happy with the new pass blocking code. Still not perfect, but the line interaction is much more dynamic and fun that it used to be - forces the QB to move around more, step up into the pocket sometimes, etc.

I think the CB interaction with WR's was sorely lacking before, too - CB's just never made mistakes, which was kinda dumb.

CB/WR major change

Just wanted to post letting everybody know I haven't been around posting much today because I've been running tons of tests and modifying stuff to try and address this. I did a dump of the whole live database, so I'm able to test with any currently live teams (well, at least as they existed a day ago).

I've found a few things so far:

Fast CB's back up too fast compared to slow WR's on streak routes, due to the fact their their acceleration is a constant. I've made them match acceleration in this case and it seems to work so far. I've put a 20 speed 20 agility guy against a 70 speed 50 agility CB and the CB is all over him in general.

Agile WR's don't have a way to fake out equally agile CB's and get open. I'm increasing the effect of the head fake and juke SA's, and adding some reduced reaction time for defenders based on vision and agility and coverage distance. The result is that on some plays the CB will stay with the WR and on others he will not make the turn with the receiver until a split second too late.

CB's were basically getting an immediate jump on the ball when thrown. I'm adding a delay on the jump based on vision agility and coverage distance. The result is that sometimes the CB gets a great jump on the ball and knocks it down while other times he waits a split second too long and doesn't get there in time. Combined with the above = botched coverage, basically.

Fast CB's with poor agility playing on close vs Fast WR's often dash forward at the snap to get within the "close" cushion and are then unable to turn around quick enough to keep up with the speedy WR. I've made them back up a little at the snap instead and wait for the WR to make his move.

QB's with decent vision hardly ever miss an open man on a checkdown, which means they will ALWAYS take advantage of the situation. I'm making them slightly more likely to miss the open guy unless they have really high vision.

Risk calculations did not take the catching ability of the receiver into account as a very big part of the calculation. Being open is the major part. I'm tweaking that a little to be willing to pass to a guy if he's just way better than his defender, even if he's not wide open.

Anyway, just an update because I know people are waiting on this and I wanted to let everybody know I'm working on it. I want to make sure it's right before pushing it out there, though!

There's so much stuff I've been tweaking it's hard to list it all. Basically when somebody submits a bug report I've been looking at it and making adjustments on the fly.

General stuff that's probably most important to people:

- RB stuttering should be a little better.
- Broken tackles were toned down from preseason game 1.
- Run blocking is still sort of in a state of adjustment. It's close to where it will be but I might tone it back a little as I watch more sims.
- DT shedding blocks should be toned down as well. They were busting through too much.

Just a heads up on cash since salaries start tonight:

I went looking through the currently broke teams and found that pretty much all of those with no money have been unable to sell a ton of tickets due to newbie mistakes on high prices or having a home game that starts in week 2/3.

So, we're going to let the currently broke teams slide for the first few days of the season on the new cash rules about going into the red on salary payments. I want to give everybody a chance to get rolling in the new season without hassle from their players not getting paid or training.

Be forewarned, though, I'll be re-enabling it in a few days once I see most of the teams have sold their tickets successfully and pulled themselves out of the red!




Some clarifications about the new QB throwing style update

- I've added another option for QB passing - pass style. This will allow the QB to determine how he throws the ball.

Medium is the default - it's been somewhere around "bullet" in the past. I've been testing with medium, though, and completion rates seemed to go up because they guys could get under the ball more easily. Depends on your receivers, though.

It's really more just a preference thing, based more on how quick your receivers are and who you're playing against or throwing to most often. All QB's can throw any of the ways.

Don't overthink it too much - it's just the angle the QB will throw the ball at. I've found that slower, loftier passes are easier for the receivers to catch because they can get into position much easier and not have to reach out for it. That also means the DB's can get into position, of course.

The thing is that I didn't actually change anything relating to DE pass rushing, so it was not intentional at all. The new plays just seem to work against them at the moment for some reason.

I'm thinking about maybe writing in some extra routines to help them get outside more as a special proc beyond the normal pass rushing stuff. (perhaps as an advanced tactics setting as well).

That's not true - the GM just has to have been around as a GM for a while, to show interest in the team. Usually we deal with it if the owner goes inactive, but if the owner has to quit, we like to keep the team together if possible.

If it makes anyone feel any better (dunno), I've recently been running all the test sims for the tactics updates with exported player data from the live site, with some of the top teams and some of the middle of the road teams.

It's really hard for anyone to tell how things will work out when we have completely new plays installed (what I'm working on) without seeing them. Yes, I'm working for realistic numbers. It's a tough balancing act to keep players from getting too out of control when they have high stats, and still keeping them in the realm of reason, but I've been tweaking values ever since the game started, and will continue to do so.

Like I've said before, though, there are so many updates rolled together currently that it's impossible to just roll out one or two. It's the whole shebang or nothing at this point, and that includes halfway working defensive tactics, random tweaks, et al.


Season Ticket Sales

Some of the low support teams didn't get reset properly, so I've reset them and am re-running the script.

Season ticket sales only processed one time last season, as they do every season. No modifications were made since then or the last time people were selling tickets.

The most common cause of no sales is setting your prices too high. If you have 100% rich support, you can probably charge about 2.5 times the expected price for your better seats like club, suites, 100 level sidelines. There are only so many rich fans to go around, though, so you gotta leave some cheap seats for the poor folks who can't afford as much!

FYI: Something with an XP modifier for players playing below their level WILL be implemented soon, in all leagues below Pro level. There will not be a bonus for being below the median level; just a penalty for being way too high leveled for your competition. This is an effect applied to each individual player, not a team as a whole.

The exact exact formula I am going to use will not be released, but median league level will be shown on the league page so each Owner/GM/Agent knows where thier players stand. The median levels will be computed daily and the penalty will be based on your player's proximity to this avg. level number. There will be a reasonable minimum set for each region, so a whole bunch of new teams or players can't drag the level down too far.

For all the dissenters who just think things will work themselves out on their own: I urge you to take a look at the various dealings of this off-season and what owners will try to get away with when we have few limits. You cannot trust some gamers to work it out on their own. There will be a-holes who will exploit wherever they can.

Now take a look at the new capped "A" league. Any complaints of team stacking? They are working out nicely.

I can hear the complaints coming already, but if you're playing in a fair way (in the spirit of the game, and you know very well what it is) and are around the right level to compete with your league, you will see ZERO to little effect on your team and players. If you're one of the guys who's moved all your level 20's down to BBB level, well, karma's a bitch.

We actually are pretty much instituting a "2 strikes and you're out policy" for most stuff (except for multis and hacking, etc that's 1 string), now that I've added a better tracking system for user accounts; where admins can make notes in the account very easily.

You do something shitty, we mark your account for "strike 1." You do something else shitty, you either lose your team or your account, depending on what you have to lose and the level of shittyness. There are several accounts sitting at "strike 1" at this very moment.

Dude, I could care less if you sign players to your team. People have been doing that all off-season and I haven't stopped it. Note that no one has forced you to remove your players from your African team. Like I've said elsewhere: other teams can improve through recruiting, too.

All I did was fine you and take back the cash from the team. DD came in and took the team after the fact. I wasn't going to do that, but I stand by any decisions he makes, and I have taken teams before for people continuing to argue after I've levied punishment. You can continue your discussion with him. I'm done with it.

Once again folks, as I've been saying again and again:

Level limits didn't get put in due to bitching, and it would not be fair to add them now after we've said they wouldn't be there for this season.

Offseason has very few limits on player movement. All this movement was supposed to happen during this time, to give people a chance to re-organize. If somebody's stacking their team in week 10, complain then, but they're going to have a lot harder time doing it. If somebody's stacking a team in their division before the season is even started, react and get some better players.

Or, look at their cash and notice thay they probably won't be able to pay those players for more than about half the season. We're going to be more strict on bankrupt teams after this season has started than we have been, to see if we can leverage money to help parity, since that seems to be the direction people want to see things go in.

There's a fallacy in some owners' thinking:

You don't have to get ALL high level players. There are tons of lower level players that would love to play, and with a starting spot they will BECOME high level players, along with helping you build chemistry. A lot of the teams that are doing well now started with players at levels 3 - 10 and built them up over time. Rome wasn't built in a day.

- Do your big moves in the offseason. This is the big one that people can't seem to get, on both sides of the fence! We've pushed everybody to doing moves in the offseason by limiting what you can do in the regular season. Now it's happening just like we planned, and people are freaking out. I wish everyone would realize that we want those moves to happen now! If you want out of ownership, do it now. If half your roster wants out of the team, do it now. We are not going to force people's players to stick where they don't want to play if the owner is letting them out. If somebody else's team becomes better than yours, sack up and do some recruiting. CPU teams will get CPU players to fill the roster out automatically, just like a brand new team that everybody is always asking for, PLUS you get stadium upgrades, and we'll fix any cash shortcomings that might have been left behind.

- Don't take the team's cash with you. If you're a team owner and you sign a bunch of signing bonuses to your players and cut them (now 6 days later, so good luck) we will come and take all that cash from your players, plus a fine. It usually means your players will end up with $5. Notes are now stored in your account when we run into this crap, so all the admins can track it better, and repeat offenders will be banned.

- Don't waste my time by making me come in and clean up your mess. That's not likely to win you any favors. Fines are likely, bans for repeat offenders who obviously know better.

- When we make a decision to fine your team, don't complain about it or I will take your team and you will be SOL.

Ok, so here's a positive reinforcement idea instead of level caps, to "encourage" parity instead of force it. This has been brought up before, but I'm posting it here for further review:

Power gamers and those looking for loopholes to pwning n00bs care about one thing: XP. They want to be uber player, gain the max XP possible, and look at their pretty attributes.

1) For every game you play, the experience an individual player gains is modified based on the levels of your opponents (or of the league) compared to your own, with say, up to a 15% modifier.

2) If you play a team or at a level (see two options below) that's around the same level as you, you get the same XP as you get now.

3) If you play a team or at a level (see two options below) that's better than you, you get an XP bonus.

4) If you play a team or at a level (see two options below) that's worse than you, you get less XP.

Levels could be based on:
1) The average level of the other team, weighted toward starters. A "better" team would be one that was, say, 3 levels higher than you on average. And worse, would be say, 3 levels lower (could be 4/5, dunno).
2) Or, the average level of the league, weighted towards the top. You get a bonus for being below the avg.

Guys, this is the off-season. There's going to be big moves going on. We want them to happen now, instead of in week 10 before the playoffs happen. People are going to move their players around to play with their friends, and we're not going to tell them they can't do that. As long as they don't take team cash to build up the new team, players can play where they want to play at this point.

Yes, it's kind of a sleazy way to go about getting your players moved but I guess it's really the only avenue left if you want to do it at this point, since we've put restrictions in place. Pretty soon we'll have so many restrictions in plance you won't be able to sign on a team any more. Maybe I should lift the min roster restriction on cutting for offseason. That way a team will at least get filled in with CPU's for the new owner.

I want to "clear the air":

The whole "trade into Africa" fiasco earlier tonight was totally my fault. I saw S.K. Devil's name dragged through the mud as tends to happen on here sometimes, and it wasn't fair to him, because I made the decision when I should have told him no.

All the guys on the team are Ok in my book too, so don't get down on them because it was not their fault.

I made a promise to SK in season 1, that I tried to keep, but I made a bad decision after a very long day. I didn't really look very closely at the level of the team, saw a free CPU team, and I just wanted to stick true to my word and take care of it before going off to take a nap.

After the nap and a cleared head, I looked at it again and tried to work something out with SK to make things more fair for the other teams, but nothing was really going to work other than moving the teams back.

Many folks were upset about it, including SK, and rightfully so. I'd like to help SK get an African team maybe for next season (assuming he's still around) so if there are any Pro teams next year that will want to move, we'll take a look at it.

From now on, we are not moving any established teams into a new league. We will also not be moving teams up and down within the same region after this off-season. Period. If your team sucks, make it better. If you're good, win the championship and move up.

Many reasons why (why isn't this on the "Never going to happen" list? Or is it?):

1) All the features that people ask for (HTML, image embedding, polls, post count, sigs) contribute to spam and annoying the crap out of a lot of people when people put in huge images for sigs, worthless polls, and links to disgusting pictures.

2) Integrating the auto team forum ability into vb would be a real PITA.

3) Integrating other features from the game, such as being linked to your GLB user account, the player avatars, player profile links, Admin status, etc) into vb would be a real PITA.

4) There are even more game integrations I want to add eventually that would be a PITA to add into vbb.

5) Vbb is written in PHP. I don't like coding in PHP. I also dont like having to deal with digging through other peoples' code, especially in PHP.

6) Vbb would require a separate Apache vhost with a PHP interpreter to run it, which would take memory and CPU time away from mod_perl to run the rest of the site, unless we set up separate servers for it, which means we'd have to pay for more servers.

7) Coding our own forum means that we own 100% of all code used on GLB. It also means that we aren't relying on somebody else's code, which might have vulnerabilities that we have to wait for fixes on.



Possible idea for fixing the auto-adjust problems

People blame auto adjust for just about everything that happens when the sim doesn't read their mind, when it really has nothing to do with it. Often times it's just the random number generator happening to land on similar numbers a bunch of times in a row, or situational stuff kicking in.

The tactics updates I am working on will remove a lot of mystery from the AI and you will all be able to see what's going on under the hood, so to speak, and modify it to how you like.

It would mean scrapping the whole player interface and generation system, rewriting all the sim code for all these new SA's, testing the balance for all of them, etc.; basically scrapping the whole current system and starting over.

Now maybe if we were starting on a new project (say, a baseball game), we could look at a different approach like this.

I'm not saying it's a bad idea. In fact, I kinda like it. It's just too ambitious to throw into the works at this point in the game.

Go for it cashpath...competition is cool with me; I'd like to see what others can come up with, unless they just totally rip us off and do a straight up copy (I'm saying: do something somewhat original if you want to do it). Just be forewarned it requires a lot more than a single server to run something that supports this many users, no matter how powerful it is. We have a whole rack of 'em at this point. The monthly bandwidth usage is measured in the thousands of GB's (TB's), which gets really spendy too.

As for the coding work, it will take far more than a couple hundred hours. I worked on GLB for about 5-6 mos before alpha was released, and have put in many more hours since then. It will test your resolve to the core. You will want to give up and quit many times, but if you can make it through and finish what you start it can be rewarding and fun.

Also, I hope you enjoy working long hours 7 days a week and listening to people complain about your creation all the time!

What I have said many times is that players are going to decline in some way at some point. They are not going to live forever and keep getting better until every stat is at 100, because that would be really dumb and would make the HOF pointless. I'm still up for suggestions on things they can do after they start to "get old" (coaches, "legacy", etc)

There is absolutely no difference in the sim from 4 days ago. The only difference between playoff code and regular season code is that it allows multiple overtimes, and saves the stats in a different place.

Here is the basic idea of the one code block in the sim that checks to see if it's playoffs and does something different than usual:

Something where you have to work together, sacrificing training or cash or energy regain or something. Something like that would easily go along with the idea we have for adding to training I mentioned in the OP.

You said earlier that new teams shouldn't expect to win right away and you're already giving them the 4 day grace period when they take over a new team.

You're encouraging mass movement of players again which makes very little sense.


We're trying to help remove that feeling of hopelessness that a lot of owners are having when their team is in the gutter when take it over. We're finding that having 10 chemistry SLOWLY climbing to where you'll maybe have 30 by next season doesn't really encourage people to stick with the team and keep trying. So, they give up and sell it back and somebody else ends up with the same feeling, repeating the cycle. We've also heard that some owners with low chemistry are finding it hard to even sign any players because they look at the chem bar and say "too bad, your chemistry sucks."

If a new team owner can at least get their chem back up to 50 or 60 within 4 or 5 games, they will be less likely to have those problems and more likely to have fun playing the game.

If we have low chem easier to fix, and chem above 70 still hard to get, then it still rewards the teams who worked for it, without punishing newer teams too much.

If it didn't attempt the FG, it's because the kick was outside of the kicker's calculated range. The computer knows exactly how far your kicker's max range is based on a formula.

There are just too many QB's out there right now for the number of D-League teams we have. Even with 98/99 stamina settings it's possible for a player to not get any plays due to random timing of subs, especially at 5th or 6th string in only one spot on the DC.

I'll be adding more D-Leagues this offseason to help out with demand, but it's not possible to add them now since the playoffs are upon us.

I like it...I have thought of trying to introduce a "coach" class into the game at some point, somehow based on existing or retiring players.

Though it's supposed to clear all player's CPU-based contract offers when the team gets sold. I'll have to make sure that happens.

Maybe I should just make it impossible to offer to players on a non D-League team. That's probably better.

Well, we weren't about to just suddenly spring "oh BTW, you have to give up 25% of the ticket revenue you budgeted for" on team owners 1 day before the playoffs.

Bonus is just extra cash so nobody's plans are screwed. We'll revisit for next season so everybody has a chance to know what's up well in advance.

Offseason moves will affect chemistry, but we have some updates to it that we'll clue you in on a little later (once we're sure of the numbers) that won't make it hurt quite as bad this next season.


Stat Bug

It's to keep people from racking up stats in some lower league and then joining another league on the last day, sniping you out of the top spot, which is what happened last season. I would say that is suckier, tbh.

I like the idea, but:

I bet there would be some people who would just hand out game balls or awards to their own player every single time, which would cheapen the whole thing.

The problem is that we don't know how long the offseason will be each year, so it just pushes you forward to day 1 when you sign during the offseason.
