Warrior General Games

Kaerey asked if I could take the scripts that I'm using for the WL/Pro league rankings and apply them to the Pee Wee Gold and Silver leagues.
I pulled the data yesterday after the Gold league's 15th game. Originally the idea was to post these after the last regular season game tomorrow, but I may be out of town so I wanted to get this up now.
Couple of issues - there's not as many games outside of the leagues in a few of the Silver leagues as I'd like, so that may skew things. Silver #2 only has 10 games, Silver #8 has 25, Silver #5 has 29 and Silver #6 has 30. All the rest are 35+. I usually like to see a minimum of 30 games, so Silver #2 especially may have odd looking rankings as they're just not very well connected.

All league games and ranked scrims are counted.
This is not a predictor, but rather a results-based ranking. It does not take margin of victory into account, just wins and losses. Look at the first post in the Pro/WL rankings for how this works (link in sig).

Interesting report for sure. Although I don't agree with all of it, there is a lot of truth and hard work. Thanks for doing it.

One thing you have to remember is that in Gold you have to plan for at least 12 games or you'll get crushed. Most silver teams only need to game plan for 4-6 games if they are decent. So there is a huge game planning advantage with teams that are in silver. And anybody who believes Maine isn't a gold quality team is insane, this has been know since mid s13.

While true about the gameplanning issue, I think the exact same thing happens in WL/Pro - in WL you need to gameplan just about every week, while in Pro the top teams gameplan for maybe half, usually less. WL tends to dominate the top of that list even more than Gold did here. I really think the biggest issue is the interconnection, though - there's no assumptions in the model that any league will be better than another going in, but without enough games between groups of teams, certain groups get too isolated to be properly ranked.

The biggest flaw I find with the model is that it's still assuming a sort of linear relationship between your rating and your chance of victory; but really that should be more exponential. However, trying to made the model more complex in that manner blows all the simplifications on the math out the window and it isn't actually just simple computation anymore, so this first-order approximation is the best it can do. I'm certainly not thrilled about a team that's played no scrims and nobody in the top 50 showing up at #16, but there's only so much you can do if the leagues don't play each other enough I think. That's actually why I started including the records vs Top 25 and Top 50, so people can get a feel for just how many upper teams someone has faced and maybe adjust the rankings mentally as appropriate.

Thanks for the time spent on the list, but it's just that -- a list that is fun to read. There is a thread every year about the silver/gold teams. The fact is that probably 80-90% of the teams in Gold would be in the top 35 or so in reality. The teams are just that much better, and it shows every season. Heck, just use a team that comes up in this discussion practically every season since the Gold inception -- Final Thought. Every season they are supposed to be the best, but where are they at? They're still in Silver.

Here's an example. Outer Banks Bootie Tappers are ranked #7. Wambulance is ranked #50. Here's the game: http://goallineblitz.com/game/game.pl?game_id=1182010 The only OB touchdowns came on special teams which is stupid this season as everyone knows.

Please don't take this the wrong way. I enjoy seeing the rankings and most of the sensible discussions that come from it. It's good for PeeWee that so many Silver teams can see credit coming their way. It will help PeeWee continue to grow. I just don't want to see more thread where there is a bunch of arguing about how someone really believes that a 13-2 Silver team is better than say our beloved #107 DSBM. Rankings just don't work that way as you pointed out in your post. Thanks again. Great work!
