I think we all agree we see the difference in behavior - I know I've seen it, but I don't follow DBs very closely to know various settings and such.
So the question now has come to "is the different behavior in the endzone intentional or accidental"
I think that while we suspect this is intentional, we should probably get Catch to weigh in on this as I don't believe it's ever been discussed directly by the Admins.
I'm going to move this to Needs Bug Admin Verification and let Catch weigh in on this.
My summary:
In the endzone, DBs who are on semi-aggressive, especially in man coverage, seem to jump the route for the ball as if they were on aggressive, or as if they had "over the top help". This causes the WR to be left alone while the DBs are moved far forward.

robponce has suggested this is intentional.
My first thought is this may be partially contributed to by the fact that the DBs are often coming to a stop before the ball is thrown in the endzone, allowing a bigger jump to the ball than elsewhere on the field, but we don't see this behavior elsewhere - even on hook routes and passes to WRs who have completed their routes and are stationary, so this may not be a factor. And in the example, the ball is thrown while the WR is still streaking into the endzone, and the DBs have time to react and turn around.
If this is a bug there may be some math errors when the ball is near the end line causing the DBs to miscalculate their intercept point, or it's possible that DBs act on aggressive in the endzone when on semi-aggressive, but it's unclear if that's intentional.
