But say you boost day 40 3x and get max xp every game. What I heard was level 80 xp was possible but you can only get to level 79. Question is how much excess xp is lost by the level 79 cap?

I think without the cap, you could get to level 80.2 or so...

Yes, the cap limits xp gains, but most limits in anything will cost something....part of the game and not a bad choice, imo...

Just trying to figure out the VA point where boosting makes sense to get the extra VAs and also cap the xp bar to get the most out of that.

You'll still get to 79 easily if you do the 22-25 boost for VA's. In fact, if not for the 79 cap, you could still get 80.
