So in a recent game, I had our AI set to punt 100% on first down late in the fourth with a big lead, so as to get our defense some more plays.

The AI Tester confirmed my settings, but the game ignored this.

So I tried it again the next game, thinking that since I didn't have the "Follow my AI exactly" box checked, it just ignored my game plan as being stupid.

Same result, even with that box checked.

It seems like the game is idiot-proofing my tactics. Any reason why it does this?

It's not a user input error, I've gone over this several times. Anyways, we're going with another solution (instead of punting), but I'm interested in why this didn't work.

I think you summed it up already. Bort put in some idiot proofing. I have seen him say it in other posts, that there was idiot proofing. He didn't expound on what that idiot proofing actually was, but this would be a good candidate. Clearly you can see how preventing people from punting on first down would prevent far more complaints than it creates.

Yes, you cannot punt on anything but 4th down, in order to protect those who were screwing up their AI settings (it happened a lot in the early sims).
