1. What are the minimum and maximum amt of players I’m allowed to have on a team?
-----a. The minimum is 40 and maximum is 55 and there is no maximum. If you drop below 40 players due to contracts expiring or an inability to recruit enough human players, your team will be filled to 40 by random CPU players. You cannot cut people if it'll drop you below 40 players.

2. Is there a benefit to playing a lower level human player over a higher level CPU player?
-----a. In the beginning there’s not much benefit, but as your human player levels up, he will assign skill points much more intelligently and be able to fit into the mold of your team better. Plus this game is built on human interaction, so if you have a team full of CPU’s you’ve missed out on a large part of the game.

3. How do I offer a player from free agency?
-----a. You must go to their profile page and in the top right you can offer a contract.
-----b. This will bring you to the offer page where you must input the person’s daily salary, bonus, and length of contract and whether the contract will have a no-trade clause. It also allows you to add a comment when you offer the contract.
-----c. You can also set your team's player needs on your roster page. This will enable you to add your team's needs to the marketplace and send automatic contract offers if you would like.

4. How do I retract an offer I gave out?
-----a. If you've over-offered and have to retract a few offers, just go to the "Received/Sent Offers" tab, click on contract offers, and you can choose to retract the offers that are still outstanding. Once someone accepts the offer, you can't retract it.

5. How do I sign a CPU player?
-----a. Like a human player, you make an offer. However, the CPU is auctioned off at night, so if someone bid on the same player (pretty unlikely) your offer could get rejected. It's best just to offer minimum salary because the market is flooded with CPU players that many owners have cut from their team.
-----b. Some CPU players will automatically be added to your roster to fill necessary roster spots.

6. How do I get a human player from a CPU team?
-----a. It’s actually the same process; human players on CPU teams are allowed to sign a human contract, even if they’re signed to a CPU contract. When that happens the CPU contract is voided. However, this only applies to the Dleague CPU teams and not CPU teams in other leagues.

7. How do I trade for a player?
-----a. You can either go to a player’s profile and click on the “make a trade offer” link, or go through the player’s team’s roster.
-----b. Then you will have to create a “fair” trade for that player through other players. The AI will determine if it’s a balanced trade and you can tell if the gray bar is within the green bar.
-----c. Once you have completed your side, the other team’s owner must approve of the trade. In the case that he does, the trade will become pending and will be processed during the night. If he rejects, you must repeat the process.
-----d. Before you put someone up on the trading block PLEASE let him know because a player does not get notified that he's being traded until he's already traded. Also, if you trade for a player, make sure you know how long their contract is and know that they are being traded
-----e. Note when you receive the player, you receive him with the remaining contract that he has, so be sure to check the person’s contract BEFORE trading for him. Also it would be a good idea to see if the player wants to be on your team or not because trading for someone who doesn’t want to be traded will give you more trouble than it’s worth.
-----f. When you trade a player, you must wait 20 days to trade him back if you want him back on your team.

8. Is there a trade deadline? If so when is it?
-----a. Yes, the trade deadline is after week 12 or day 24. The last trades can be done on day 24, but after that, you can't trade or cut any player. You will still be allowed to add players.

9. How do I release a player?
-----a. You have to go to a player’s profile and click “Release Player”
-----b. You will need to confirm that you want to release the player and he will be dropped.
-----c. It is best to let that player know in advance what you're doing (if it's a human player) so that he has time to look for another team because a player will not know he is cut until he sees himself as a free agent.

10. How do I renegotiate a contract?
-----a. You have to go to a player’s profile and click “Renegotiate Contract”.
-----b. The page will look exactly like the offer player page, except you’re doing it with a player that’s currently on your roster.
-----c. You can not renegotiate a player's contract downward until after day 24.

11. How do I put players onto the depth chart?
-----a. Click on the depth chart tab and click on the position you want to put a player in the depth chart for. Look at the “Available Roster” for the player that you want to add and click assign to position.
-----b. If you want to take someone off the depth chart just click “Remove from Position” and they will drop down into the “Available Roster”.
-----c. Whenever you make any changes in the depth chart, make sure you press "Update" or else the changes won't be saved.

12. What happens if the player is inactive, can I still play him?
-----a. If a player is inactive, you can still play him. In the short term, nothing really changes, but if the player stays inactive and levels up, they will not be able to spread the 5 skill points around. Also, the training settings can't be changed if he's inactive, so there's a very good chance his energy will not replenish properly after a game.

13. How many players do you put into the KOS/KRS areas of the depth chart?
-----a. You will need to put at least 10 players in the depth chart of those slots. The order you put them in will determine how they line up for the first couple of special team plays, but as stamina goes into effect, the players’ positions will start going out of whack.
-----b. If you don’t have enough players on the depth chart, or a player is too tired to play his spot, the AI will put someone else in for you that isn’t on the list (usually based upon energy). If you don’t want the AI randomly choosing somebody, make sure that the KOS/KRS positions have more than 10 players on them.

14. How are the formations of the special teams determined from the depth chart and what players are traditionally used?
-----a. Here are the formations of the KOS and KRS. The numbering goes top to bottom of the depth chart:

KOS (Kickoff Unit)
-------------------------
___________K__________
10_8_6_4_2___1_3_5_7_9

POS (Punt Unit)
-------------------------
___________C__________
_____5_3_1___2_4_6____
____7_____________8___
______________________
____________9_________
______________________
___________P__________

KRS (Kickoff Return Unit)
-------------------------
9__7___5__4__6___8__10
______________________
_______1__2__3________
______________________
______________________
__________KR__________

PRS (Punt Retrun Unit)
-------------------------
9____5_3_1_2_4_6____10
______________________
________7_____________
___________8__________
______________________
______________________
_________P____________

-----b. Traditionally for kick-off special teams (KOS), you want people from the defensive side of the ball with some speed (because you're trying to tackle the kick returner).
-----c. Traditionally for kick-return special teams (KRS), you want good blockers to create holes for your kick returner to zip through.

15. How come I can’t put some players in 2 positions simultaneously?
-----a. There are going to be instances where you might want to put a player in as a backup in one position and a starter in another (ie LOT vs ROT). Sometimes the AI will not let you do this, but there is a way to circumvent this:
-----b. For the position that you want the player to start in, put a CPU, or some random player in as the starter. Then put the desired player in both backup slots. Then remove the random player or starter from the position.

16. Are there special considerations that need to be taken in terms of playing time with the depth chart?
-----a. Understand that you will have 2 starting slots for OT, OG, DE (L and R), DT (NT and DT), and WR and CB (Top 2 slots) as well as 3 starting slots for LB (LOLB, MLB, ROLB). So plan your roster to properly back-up those positions.
-----b. There are 2 positions that must be carefully looked at in terms of playing time and those are the FB and LB’s:
----------i. On the offensive side, there is going to be a fraction (~20%) of all plays that will call for a 3 WR set, which will have the FB sitting and a WR take his place. The amount of times this happens will correspond with how many passing plays you call. This will decrease the amt of playing time for FB’s and increase the playing time for WR, so make sure your depth chart takes this into account.
----------ii. On the defensive side, the AI will periodically (~30% of all plays) set up a nickel or dime package. In a nickel package, the LOLB will sit and be replaced by a CB. In a dime package, both the LOLB and ROLB will be replaced by CB’s. The number of plays this is employed in will correspond to how many pass defense plays you set. But this will decrease the playing time for the LOLB and ROLB (moreso the LOLB) and increase the playing time for CB’s, so make sure your depth charts reflects these issues.
----------iii. These issues will probably be resolved once the admins and developers implement the advanced tactics, but until then realize that these things occur.

17. How do I assign a GM and what can they do?
-----a. You assign a GM by clicking on the “Assign GM’s” link on your team’s profile page.
-----b. Your GM does not have to be a player on your team, he can be anybody you want, but you should be able to trust him.
-----c. Once you click that, you must enter the person’s username and then determine how much access he has based upon these privileges:
----------i. Adjust Offense – He will be able to adjust the offensive tactics (like an OC) and general tactics (stamina requirements and auto tactics)
----------ii. Adjust Defense – He will be able to adjust the defensive tactics (like a DC) and general tactics (stamina requirements and auto tactics)
----------iii. Adjust DC – Adjust Depth Chart (self-explanatory)
----------iv. Make Trades – Self-explanatory
----------v. Send Offers – Self-explanatory (but when a player accepts or rejects the offer, only the owner is notified, not the GM)
----------vi. Renegotiate/Cut Players/Stadium/Finances/Mod Forum – All these should be self explanatory.
-----d. You can have as many GM's as you want

18. What should I set my stamina requirements to?
-----a. There is no right or wrong answer for this and people will be shifting their values as the gameplay changes http://goallineblitz.com/game/forum_thread.pl?thread_id=79811. When you are setting these numbers, you have to take into consideration the stamina of your players, your depth chart and the amount of energy they will expend.
-----b. The general rule is that the closer the 2 numbers are, the faster the subbing will be. And the lower the numbers are, the longer the starter will stay in.
-----c. The default setting for stamina are 35% Min Stamina before Sub (the energy level that’s reached by the starter before the backup comes in) and 65% Min Stamina to Return (the energy level that’s optimally needed for a player to return to the field) - this setting should only be used if you want to max out your starters
-----d. Other unique settings to consider:
----------i. 75/0 - Or any number for sub out and 0-10 for sub in. Only use this if there are 2 ppl in the depth chart. What this will do is have the starter drop down to the 1st energy lvl and then pretty much swap plays with the backup for the rest of the game.
----------ii. 98/99 - Used by the CPU teams, this setting rotates through the depth chart and the person with the best stamina will usually play more.

19. How useful is the auto tactic adjustment?
-----a. Once again this is all a matter of opinion. But the way the auto tactic adjustment works is that it will alter your team’s gameplan based upon which plays are successful and which ones aren’t. You can adjust the severity of the change on a scale of 0-100.
-----b. While this sounds like a great idea, the AI can auto adjust to the point where it completely disregards your gameplan, so be careful on how you use it if you do choose to. And you should probably tweak the settings as you go along.

20. How do individual player tactics play into a gameplan?
-----a. You will need to indicate what type of gameplan you're going to execute in order for each individual player to set their advanced tactics. If their tactics coincide with your gameplan, you will have a lot more success. For example, the QB has individual settings of how often he scrambles and who his top receiving targets are. If you want to play a short passing game, you'll want him to set the receivers to the possession receivers/TE or FB, not a speed receiving deep threat. Communication with your team before a game is very important to get each individual's advance tactic to sync up with your gameplan.

Due to popular demand, here are the screenshots for all advanced tactics (K/P is the same as offense, but without running style).

NOTE: These are based solely upon which position a player is put on the depth chart. If any player (they do not have to be a QB) is put in the QB spot, they'll get the QB tactic options.

QB Tactics:

Offense Except for QB (Yes, they're all the same, I checked by creating all positions, putting them on my team and putting them on the depth chart):

All Defense (Yes, they're all the same right now, I have all the positions):

21. What is the yardage length for short, medium and long passes?
- There's 2 trains of thought here...I personally use the first set of numbers.
-----a. Short = 0-7 or 0-5 yds
-----b. Medium = 7-15 or 5-10 yds
-----c. Long = 15+ or 10+ yds

22. Is there anything else I need to know about tactics?
-----a. No, basically the majority of your time outside of personnel issues will reside in studying other team’s (and your own) game tape to determine what the best tactics settings will be for your team’s success.
-----b. The better you know the strengths and weaknesses of your own team, the more successful your gameplanning will be. If you base your gameplan solely on the other team and take your team out of what it’s good at, it probably won’t be a recipe for success. A good gameplan, along with other factors (such as energy, chemistry and play intensity), could help you overcome a 1-2 level deficit.

IMPORTANT TACTICS NOTE:

There have been concerns about the CPU not following the tactics even when autoadjust was turned off. This will happen in 2 situations (that I've seen, there may be more):
-----a. If your team is down by too much (I believe more than 10 points), your team will become pass happy regardless of your settings. This is done by the CPU to help you "catch-up" to your opponent quicker. So this could skew your numbers heavily towards passing if you get down early very quickly.
-----b. At the end of a game if your team is up and has the ball, your team will become run-heavy in order to run out the clock. This will skew towards your running numbers a bit.
-----c. If you get near the endzone and you go into a goalline formation, your QB could pass to your HB or FB even if you set those passing percentages to 0

If anyone else notices a scenario where an inordinate amount of one sort of play gets called, let me know and I'll add it to the FAQ.

This issue has been brought up and noted, check out the last comment in this thred: http://goallineblitz.com/game/forum_thread.pl?thread_id=129513

maybe i'm not a great game-planner, but a 2 level advantage is nigh impossible to circumvent. if anyone has a game in which the average starter was 2 levels higher, and lost, please link it.

otherwise, that was some great stuff. sections on special teams and the depth chart trick was good stuff

In this game, we were definitely 1-2 lvls below our opponent. There has been a lot of turnover on both sides, but they definitely outleveled us by a noticeable margin. Granted we won in overtime, but there are ways to overcome the margin in lvls. And it will be easier to do that once everyone gets into the higher levels.

But you're probably right, there were other factors in play and it wasn't just gameplanning. I'll edit the comment so that it doesn't sound so definite and mislead people.

Great work!

There's a problem with the links in the first post (at least in my browsers), though. You need an extra space after the link and before the . for them to work properly.

I have only released CPU guys so far (I'm a nice owner!), but I'm wondering: I can't just cut any player at any time from my team, can I?

Doesn't the player have to accept being released from a contract? I had my QB released a couple of nights ago, but I don't remember exactly how it went...

Cheers.

Actually you can cut human players the same way. It's a bit cold, but it's been done before. The player doesn't even have to accept it. Same goes with a trade, the player doesn't need to accept it or even know about it. Once a player signs a contract, he loses all leverage and is at the mercy of the owner/GM.

Aha, thanks. But whoah - I'm an owner now, but I still find that pretty harsh on the players.

I mean, if you sign a contract with a team, I think both parties should be obliged to honor that contract, unless of course mutually agreeing to terminate it.

(I might of course have missed some sort of other relevant issue)

with the expansion a bunch of inactive players were assigned to teams, not being able to release them or to release them with a penalty, would have been crucial. With the state of the game, I'm happy there is no penalty or limit.

Of course, inactive players is a completely different issue (but I do not believe they were assigned to new teams, they must have been leftovers on existing teams being sold & bought by new owners).
