I am sure this has been mentioned but it is ridiculous how common 80+ yard automatic touchbacks are. 80+ yard kickoffs should only happen 15-20 times a season (not 7 of 8 or 10 of 12 times a game) by the best kickers. It practically makes kickoff teams irrelevant (outside of having a power kicker) in the higher leagues. I wouldnt even mind it if it were only dialed down so that the best distance kickers were still routinely kicking it into (but no out of) the EZ. At least the return team would have the option to take the touchback (or run it out if desired).

Potential Solution: Make an 80 yard kick the longest possible (who really cares how far it goes past 80... an automatic TB is an automatic TB) so basically it takes a perfect kick to kick it out of the back of the EZ. To do this, nerf the kickoff code that determines kickoff distance (overall kicker strength does NOT need to be nerfed we do not want to affect fgs). Kicking 80 yards should for the most part be an RNG "luck" type occurance (once or twice a season for players not built to do so and maybe once a game for players that are) reserved for only the best distance kicking builds (no more kickers kicking 80 yard kickoffs with the VA Booming Kick... this would give some incentive for kickers to invest in this VA over other VA's they choose to better themselves for fg's).

Anyway this is just a rough idea... but the fact of the matter is that kickoffs have become a joke at the higher levels.

so should 30 yard average KR...besides, there are guys that can kick it out of the end zone consistently when they want to.

Are you referring to the NFL... if so, why wouldnt they kick it out of the back of the EZ every time then?

30+ yard KR averages are mostly because most have no clue how to run a proper ST's unit... probably because they rely on their kicker to kick TBs every kick.

80+ yard kick returns don't need to go.

Having 5 or more in one game, that needs to go.

Just sounded like you assumed I wanted all 80 yarders gone because my thread title is a little misleading. My bad.

Agreed, there are way too many 80+ yard kickoffs in GLB. In the NFL it is very rare to see a kicker send the ball 80 yards on a kickoff, I mean you might see it once or twice per week in the entire league. WL is filled with kickers that do it several times per game. Being able to consistently send the kickoff to the back of the end zone ought to be satisfying enough. Or maybe kickers need an ability to directional kick instead of kicking straight ahead to the KR every time. One way or another, there needs to be more to getting a touchback than simply getting up to level 60+ and blasting kickoffs through the goal posts.

Kickoff returns need to be dialed down a bit more than anything. But if kickoffs beyond 80 yards go, which aren't uncommon in real life, so should 50 yard kickoffs. Minimum kickoff distances need to go up too.

80+ yard kickoffs aren't uncommon in real life? Huh?
If kick returns were shortened, kickoff returns would naturally be shortened as a result of that. It's easy to rip off a 30 yard return when you're starting from 8 yards deep in your own end zone.
