There are numerous books and series in the same genre that are much better. Anything by R.A. Salvatore for example.

the first three books are the best and neville longbottom is the real hero of the series.

The first two movies are worse than their respective books, but not by a lot, Columbus just didn't really know what to do with such a monumental project. The third and fourth are good, about as good as the books, and all the Yates movies are outstanding and miles better than the books

Also the harry potter characters are quite a bit better developed personality wise (especially supporting characters) than in forgotten realms
