Game Mechanics FAQ (Gameplay, Training, Equipment and Leveling)

********************************************************************************

Updated version of this is on the wiki: http://www.glbwiki.com/index.php?title=Game_Mechanics_FAQ

********************************************************************************

1. How do I play this game?
-----a.You don’t control the player during the actual game. The actual game is simmed based upon the build of your character. All you are responsible for as a player is to manage where the skill points are assigned and build the character so that he fulfills the role that he’s supposed to play on the team.

2. Can I watch the game?
-----a. During the actual sim process, you can't watch. It lasts a short period of time ~15 min, but immediately after it’s done, you can watch a diagrammed play-by-play of every single snap taken.

3. How long is a season and how many games are in a season?
-----a. Each season is 40 days and is split into a regular season and playoffs. The regular season is 32 days and a game is played every other day, so every team has 16 regular season games. The playoffs last 8 days and has games every other day.
-----b.There is also an offseason that is variable depending on what the devs and admins decide to do. During the offseason, you do not get paid and do not train.

4. How can we tell what day it is during a season?
-----a. The day of the season is posted in your homepage in the top right hand corner.

5. How do playoffs work? How do relegations/promotions work?
-----a. You must be in the top 8 of your conference to make the playoffs. And it is single elimination. The top teams in each conference, through playoff, get promoted to the next league (there are 2 conferences in a league and 16 teams per conference)
-----b. The bottom 2 teams in each conference drop down to the lower league

5(add). How are ties broken in the standing?
-----a. If there are only 2 teams, it's just based upon the head-to-head matchup
-----b. If there are more than 2 teams, then it's based upon these factor in this order:
1. # of head-to-head wins against the other teams with the same record
2. # of points scored
3. # of points allowed.

6. What factors are considered in determining the performance of my player during a game?
-----a. There are 8 major factors that contribute to the success or failure of your player and team: The player build, team/player tactics, player intensity, player energy level, injury, player morale, team chemistry and the out of position penalty.
----------i. Player build – you are matched up against the person that you’re either defending or is defending you. So if you’re a WR and a CB is guarding you, if your speed stats are lower than his, it’ll make it harder for you to separate yourself and make a catch. The key for your build is to create a mismatch with the opponent. In the beginning it’s not good to be too balanced because balance in the beginning is just mediocrity. To learn more about building a player, see this http://goallineblitz.com/game/forum_thread.pl?thread_id=6371 thread for insights into creating a more successful player. There is no perfect build, so take advice you get with a grain of salt. It's just someone else's opinion.
----------ii. Team/Player Tactics – the team tactics are set by the owner or the GM, while the player tactics are set by you. Right now the tactics are very basic, but that will change over the course of the season while the devs and admins continue coding. With good scouting and a good gameplan, teams can overcome their deficiencies and can potentially beat people with levels higher than them. For example, if the opponent is a good running team and the defense is set to stop the run, and they run too much they will not gain as much yardage.
----------iii. Player Intensity – Every player has a setting for playing intensity. If the set intensity is on relaxed, you will have a decrease in attributes, but your energy will drop slower than normal. If the set intensity is on intense, you will have a boost in attributes, but your energy will drop quicker than normal. The bonus to your skills is as follows (this is not entirely confirmed):
----------------1. Hard - 10% bonus to skills
----------------2. Normal - 0% bonus to skills
----------------3. Relaxed - -10% bonus to skills
----------iv. Player energy – is something that directly affects the amount of playing time a player has and the quality of play the player has when on the field. This quantity is determined solely by 2 factors, stamina and what type of plays you’re doing (ie if a DT gets double-teamed all the time, his energy will drop quicker, if you’re a safety and the other team just runs a lot and you don’t have to tackle, you’re energy won’t drop as quick). During the game this will drop to a certain level. After the game is over, your energy bar in your profile will be how much energy you have left from the game (it will never drop more than 40 points from your original energy, but it can still drop below 60 if you started the game below 100). To regain energy you, must train (more on training later). When the new season starts, your energy will reset back to 100.
For a much more in-depth rundown of energy, look here: http://goallineblitz.com/game/forum_thread.pl?thread_id=197617
----------v. Injury**Has not been implemented yet** If your player is overwhelmed, or has low energy, he’s very likely to get injuries. An injured player will have decreased attributes based on how serious it is (5-50% stat reduction).
----------vi.Player morale – works like energy as a stat modifier and is affected if you make a big play, or a big play happens to you. For example if you’re an OT and you allow a sack, your player’s in-game morale will drop. If you’re a WR and you score a touchdown your morale will go up. After the game, your morale bar will be set based on whether you won or lost the game. If you won, your bar will go up, if you lost it will go down. And if the team go on a losing streak, your morale bar will drop quicker. The morale bar tells you what morale you start with at the beginning of the next game. Confidence will help your morale in-game by preventing your morale to drop too much after a bad play and boost your morale more when you make a good play. When the new season starts, your morale will reset back to 100
----------vii.Team Chemistry – This bar will favor teams who stay together longer. This can have up to a 9% affect on each player's major attributes. See the following threads for more details on how to increase/decrease team chemistry:
http://goallineblitz.com/game/forum_thread.pl?thread_id=76117
http://goallineblitz.com/game/forum_thread.pl?thread_id=308095
----------viii. Out-of-position Penalty - If your player is played out of position (ie OT playing as G), there will be a penalty based upon how drastic the switch is. So a FS playing as a SS probably won't have much of a penalty compared to if a C playing as a SS, which will have a huge penalty. These penalties have not been quantified (and I don't expect them to be), so you need to test it out for yourself. Generally, any switch of similar positions (O-line, D-line, DB's) won't carry a big enough penalty to discourage you from doing it.

7. How does training work? For more in-depth analysis, go to this thread: http://goallineblitz.com/game/forum_thread.pl?thread_id=78600
-----a. What’s the cost of training per day?
----------i. On relaxed = $10 x your level
----------ii. On normal = $75 x your level
----------iii. On intense = $200 x your level
-----b. What do you gain from training per day?
----------i. On relaxed = +15 in energy and a boost in an attribute of your choice
----------ii. On normal = +9 in energy and a boost in an attribute of your choice (18% more than relaxed)
----------iii. On intense = +3 in energy and a boost in an attribute of your choice (30% more than relaxed)
----------iv. You will also gain XP when you train, the amount is solely dependent upon your level. As your level increases, the amt of XP/day decreases. You do not train in the offseason, thus you will not gain XP during the offseason
----------v. The amount your attribute will boost is solely dependent upon the base value of the attribute that it is boosting (sans equipment). As your skill goes up, the boost you get for that skill will decrease.
-----c. What’s the best way to train?
----------i. There is no best way. It is totally dependent upon the situation and what you feel is best when all things are considered ($$$, stat boost, energy).

8. What happens if I set the training focus to "None" at relaxed intensity?
-----a. I just tested this out, and there are 3 things that happen:
----------i. Obviously, you don't get a gain in any attributes
----------ii. You gain +18 energy
----------iii. You don't gain XP
-----b. So you can weigh all these factors into whether you should train like this or not. The major deterrent is not getting XP, but if your energy drops too much as the season progresses, you could lose out on playing time.

9. How does game experience work? What is it based on?
-----a. Game experience is based primarily on the number of plays that you are in the game. It doesn't matter what stats you rack up, those don't count towards XP.
-----b. The max XP is gained at around 50 plays or so.
-----c. The max amount of XP you can get is based upon the level of the player, the higher the level, the less XP you get. For a level 1, you can get around 600 XP in a game, while a level 8 can only get around 400 XP a game.
-----d. The amount you get per play is based largely upon a log-type curve, so even if you don't get the max amount of points, you can get close to the max with about 30 plays or so.
-----e. Here's a general XP guide that someone wrote up. The numbers might not be 100% accurate, but there's a pretty good approximation of things:
http://goallineblitz.com/game/forum_thread.pl?thread_id=213802

10. When I try to add to a special ability, it gives me a "prerequisite not met" warning. What is the prerequisite for adding points into special abilities?
-----a. In order to add to special abilities, you have to add from left to right. Here's an example. For an OT, the Run Blocking Abilities Tree looks like this:

Run Block -> Get Low -> Hands -> Cut Block -> Pancake

The rule for adding points is that the category you add points to can be double the previous ability's points. So if I put a point into run block, I can put 2 points into get low. If you don't have any points in run block, you'll get the "prerequisite not met" if you want to add any points to any of the other special abilities.

11. How does equipment work?

http://www.glbwiki.com/index.php?title=Equipment#Upgrade_Prices

http://www.glbwiki.com/index.php?title=Advanced_Equipment

http://www.glbwiki.com/index.php?title=Equipment#Custom_Equipment

You must equip all equipment in order to see its effects (it will make your attribute number blue)

-----a. When you add equipment, it does not play into how many points are needed to increase an attribute (ex. If you upgrade your custom equipment and you already have 1 pt in first step, it will only cost 1 skill point to get it to 3, instead of the normal 2 skill points had you not had the equipment upgrade)

First of all you can only upgrade your equipment at every 8 levels! so after levels 1 and 8..it goes in multiples of 8.

Equipment level ---- cost for 1 piece --- cost for set (all 4)

Level 1 ---- $500 ---- $2000

Level 8 ---- $2500 ---- $10000

Level 16 ---- $12,500 ---- $50,000

Level 24 ---- $50,000 ---- $200,000

Level 32 ---- $200,000 ---- $800,000

Level 40 ---- N/A ---- N/A

We'll stop there for now

Now to give you the potential skill points it adds per equipment and for the whole set

Level 1 ---- 1 ---- 4
Level 8 ---- 2 ---- 8
Level 16 ---- 3 ---- 12
Level 24 ---- 4 ---- 16
Level 32 ---- 5 ---- 20
Level 40 ---- 6 ----- 24

and last but not least the Custom Equipment

With Custom equipment you can spend FP to create an item and apply up to 6 skill points on it! You can add each skill point at different times if you so choose.

You must name your custom equipment before you can buy it

Each skill point cost 100 FP.

so the total FP to spend for 6 is 600

You also have the option (at level 8 and above) to add an ENTIRE special skill tree to your custom equipment for an additional 300 FP.

NOTE - you can not add anymore then 6 skill points to your custom item and you will not be able to upgrade this beyond the 6 skill points.

If you decide to sell any of your REGULAR equipment, you can sell it back for 50% worth the original price.
If you decide to sell any of your Custom equipment, you will get only 70% of your FP back, So spend wisely!

12. How can I level up?
-----a. There are two ways of leveling up, by gaining 1000 XP points, or by boosting
----------i. You gain XP points by playing in games and by training (this was already covered above). Your game XP is largely dependent upon how many plays you are in per game. The number of plays you need to play to max out the XP is going to be around 50 plays. The amount of XP you get per game will also decrease as your level goes up. A very general scale of how much XP to expect is as follows: lvl 1, 600-700XP, lvl 4, 400-500XP, lvl 7, 300-400XP.
----------ii. Boosting requires flex points and you can only boost 3 times in a season. A boost costs the amount that your player cost (so for a QB it’s 300 FP, for any defensive player it’s 200 FP, for any O-line member it’s 100 FP, etc) and it gives your player an automatic 1000 XP points.

13. What happens when I level up?
-----a.You gain 5 skill points to place wherever you want, and 3 skill points automatically get assigned to certain attributes. For how those points are split, look here: http://goallineblitz.com/game/forum_thread.pl?thread_id=25826

14. Are players ever forced to retire? How does that work?
-----a. As of now, when a player reaches 10 full seasons of play (so if he started on season 1 day 10, he'll start declining season 11 day 10) his stats will start to decline faster than leveling up can compensate for.
-----b. The player will not be forced to retire, but if you do chose to retire him, you'll get 100% of the creation points (so 100 for non-glamour, 200 for normal, 300 for glamour) and 70% of the boosted points back.
-----c. There may be other options for your player once he reaches 10 full seasons of play, but that has yet to be determined.

I need a clarification. Is it the bottom two teams from each conference or is it the the last place team from each conference in a league? (Ex:One from the eastern conference and one from the western conference or two from each).
