Welcome to the limit

Take it maybe one step more
The power game's still playing so
you better win it

We need some sort of montage to go with this.

I agree for the most part, but there is a speed curve. If your ahead of it, you won't have a problem getting open. If you are behind it, even by 1 point, you will struggle. (It is actually more of a deadzone for speedsters who take speed high, but not high enough. People who aren't trying to beat people with speed, 90 speed guys, won't have a problem with this) If you are going to try and win by 1 attribute, it absolutely, positively needs to be on the bleeding edge of insanity for it to work. Perhaps there are diminishing returns, but if you have 4 extra points of speed diminished to the equivalent of 1 point of speed, that is still giving you a sizeable boost when you are on the cutting edge.

So you're saying there is more than one way to build a player AND still be successful?

I wonder if scheme has anything to do with it...

Scientific (sort of?) evidence that 'imbalanced' building wins over complete balance and complete min/max. Bout' time. I've been spouting this kind of stuff since season 3 (along with OTs get your heads out your rear and build to COUNTER speed rushers!)

I know CBs with 95 speed can cover WRs with 115, so I am on board with this theory.

One thing I don't get though, is that you are talking about maximum player velocity as though it is the same regardless of the player's speed.

My understanding is that players with more speed have a higher maximum velocity. Unless you are saying that they never run far enough to actually accelerate to that higher velocity, which would make your argument make sense.

I've thought (and said) that for a while. What good does 120 speed do when you're running a 10 yard route? Great after the catch, maybe, but but odds are, if the QB and the WR are on the same screen, you aren't getting to 120.

Then what about elusive HBs? They would need high speed as once they break into the secondary, it's balls to the wall to higher max velocity.

I'm still a little confused, I guess.

Even so, its not (usually) straight line running--there's usually a cut or two and some sort of an angle to the goal line. *shrugs*

From what i've noticed from when I USED to have higher lvl players(S1's) was that the guys with speed in the hundreds it only showed itself after the initial play , i;e YAC or break thru the line and open field. As far as routes they always looked pretty sublime until the ball was caught or once the last tackle attempt was made if that makes sense ?
