Add another slot for the equipment. It just means you get even more points of bonus, which was not what the upgrade was about. It was more about letting you get SA's and such than additional +1's to your attributes.
What I am considering, and leaning towards:
1. Letting BT upgrades raise the +% or +SA on the gear by 1/2%, possibly with a max of 3 times (so +4 max SA, +11% max pct).
2. Letting you merge your basic equipment into your advanced equipment somehow, at 50% or something, with a BT cost.
3. Doing a graduated scale on upgrades in BT's (6/8/10, etc)
1. If you want advanced equipment to replace normal equipment, this is probably the best way to do it. This type of upgrading actually makes the equipment worthwhile. I do believe giving veterans 5 bonus tokens per season played (or, lowering the 1st upgrade to 6, 2nd to 8, and then 3rd and forward are 10) works with this option.
2. My big questions with crafting/merging, because the crafting would most likely cost BT's as you point out:
----A. Once merged, at a 50% (approx.) cost of the normal equipment (i.e. +6 becomes +3+Advanced equipment bonuses), does the equipment upgrade like normal equipment or does it still require bonus tokens?
----B. If it is considered advanced equipment requiring bonus tokens, is the crafted equipment considered a level 1 piece of equipment, meaning it could be upgraded multiple times until you've caught up to your lvl break (24/32/40/etc.)? (+1 any attribute, +1 SA or 1%)
----C. If it is considered normal equipment, will it be considered at the current level of upgrading, meaning if you were already fully upgraded, you have to wait until the next 8-lvl break to upgrade again with $$$$ (+1 any attribute)
3. I think you can do this, or give vets 5 BT's per full season (max that can be carried over) they have played in the game and keep the cost at 10 BT's per upgrade, allowing most vets to do 1 upgrade right away and a 2nd pretty quickly, so that the advanced equipment catches up to the regular equipment and actually makes it a viable option.
